Such an excitement to camp on your own island! It is quiet and private. You can walk around naked like our early ancestors 🙂 Open all the doors like this
This island is called the Camel Back Island. It is located on the Kabetogama Lake. You can check here to read the reviews: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campsites/63437017 Book early. We were there in early August, and I made reservations in April.
It is such a wonderful island. I have no complaints and will stay again. It looks cool from the Google map.
It looks handsome too from the water 🙂
It is easy to dock your boat, although there is no dock. Note that some boat rentals do not allow you to rent their boat if there is no dock.
The island has a bald eagle nest, and there is this baby eagle standing on the tree most of the time (it cannot yet fly) waiting for his/her parents. There are quite a lot of bald eagles in Voyagers National Park. One time I saw it at the Brown Bay.
On this island, there is an area of rocks near the water that are fun to climb around and the view is gorgeous, especially in the early mornings and before sunset. It’s so peaceful and makes you forget all the chaos in life. I especially like to brush teeth and do morning stretches here 🙂
Camp ground is clean and has everything you need. Two tent spaces, a metal picnic table, a campfire pit, two bear-safe locks. There are plenty of trees so you can easily stay in the shade. We even managed to set up a hammock.
Island camping does not have water! Here are our sinks and bathroom 🙂 It is a five star bathroom experience when you can sit in the nature, listen to the sound of birds and look at the beautiful sceneries. We stayed 4 nights and at the 5th day, I indeed felt it is too sticky and need shower badly 🙂
Here are our itineraries for your reference. We are driving a low horse power pontoon boat, so the speed probably 20-30 miles per hour. There are higher horse power motor boats that can travel much faster but make sure you book the boat early (maybe at the same time when you book the campsite).
Day 0: Visited Kabetogama lake visitor center, arrived at the island and setup Day 1: Explored an unknown island and the national park designated site– the rock garden island and of course, fishing! Day 2: Visited Ash visitor center, Hiked Blind Ash trails and explored two small unknown islands and then fishing Day 3: We drove far beyond Kabetogama Lake and arrived at the Hoist bay, I.W. Steven’s Cabin and also dropped by the lost lake fishing (try our luck).
Future visiting location: Visitor center @ rainy lake. We need to drive further north to international falls. It should be also fun to check out the locator trails and gold portage trails that connect lakes. The rangers said there are ticks in the national park. Make sure you check careful after coming back.
