Bahamas (2) Pink Sand Beach

I have been to many beaches, but my favorite is this pink sand beach. It is so romantic and I almost believe that all the proposes should happen here —- there are these endless pink sands, the blue green ocean, the rolling white foams, crystal clear water that hug your angles … You just think “wow, the beauty of the earth and the nature has no limits!” The word of “romantic” automatically jumps into your mind.

Rosy like your cheeks

Here are some examples of other beaches I have visited. What is your favorite colored beach?

Yellow Beach @ Outer Banks

white beach @ Aruba

black beach @ the Big Islands, Hawaii

The pink sand beach is located on the Harbor island and at the edge of the islands of Bahamas, facing the Atlantic ocean.

You can get there by ferry from Nassau, which only runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In the morning, the ferry leaves around 8am or 8:30am from Nassau so you will arrive at the Harbor island around 11:00 to11:30am. In the afternoon, the ferry leaves the Harbor island around 3:40pm and reach Nassau 6:30-7pm. It costs around 225 dollars per adult passenger. If you go with some tourists group, it costs close to 500 dollars for a day. I heard that there is also an option of flying over. Anyways, this island is not easy to reach.

The ferry is cold and no external food/drink allowed. But you will travel with a lot of locals. The ferry first stops at the Spanish Well and then arrives at the Harbor island.

These islands are full of this classical freshmen town’s vibe, which I like a lot. I am not very into those luxury resorts’ vibe :D, and they are just too similar.

As soon as we got off the boat, there were some locals walking towards us and asked if we want to rent a golf cart for $50 a day. This person took us to a local bank and got the cash and then pointed us the direction to the beach. The golf cart is the major transportation on this 7 miles long island for the tourists, although the locals do drive their cars around.

The island has a lot of restaurants, even ones at the beach, and also a cute grocery store. The beaches have a lot of chairs, so it is pleasant to stay here to read, enjoy the wind, tread the water or ride some horses.

Besides staying at the beach, I also enjoyed driving the golf cart around the town to explore the interesting local village called the Dunmore Town. See what I have just found? the Daddy D’s Night Club! wow, hope I can check it out at night and see who is that “D” :D?

They say “here is the home of friendly people”!

At the opposite side of the village, there are a few private, luxury resorts with tennis court and so on. When we arrived at Nassau, it’s already quite dark.

It’s a busy day to visit a remote island. Yet, this island is like a fairy tale impressed in our memory. That romance still stays between the breaths.

It’s Fall again: Central Grove Orchard

Fall is a beautiful season —- high blue skies, colorful leaves, fruits heavenly hanged from the trees, families happily push around the pumpkins. Since my son was born, I took him to Central Grove Orchard every year, sometimes just us and sometimes with friends. I never felt it’s a baby sitting or a kid thing, and most of the time I am happily playing too. We love this orchard, because every detail here says the cheerfulness of the workers. Every one here smiles, and they build or create new fun things every year. It’s easily spending a day here. We see many families, couples, friends, and also big family reunions (one tip is to remember buy your tickets online, it can save you a couple of dollars per person).

Apple picking! The best time for apple picking is the beginning of October. The freshly picked apples are so tasty. We typically buy a bag of 1/2 and cost $11.95. Then you can pick whatever you want from the trees. My son waves an apple-pick stick like his secret weapon 🙂

Pumpkin picking! My son likes to pick pumpkins from the vines. It is the festivity of picking a pumpkin that worth us additional money and efforts, comparing to just buying one from the supermarket. It’s a good time to show off my muscles too, as you know, they are heavy 🙂 . Ah, ouch, the little thorns on the vine were poking me. I immediately used my hat to wrap around its stem.

Baby goats! This baby goat is only 2 weeks old. Like this lady, I was also holding her, so was my son. Our smiles are so big in the pictures. My son said that’s his favorite part of the day.

We were bottle feeding the baby goats (it cots $3 dollars).

More animals! The rooster was saying cock-a-doodle-doo at 5pm 😀 —- Everyone is hungry here.

Our favorite zip lines! I managed to record a ride! The wait is short and only 2-3 people ahead of us.

Big big slides! I remembered that at the first time we went, my son only can ride in my arms, and now he can enjoy doing everything by himself. Time flies!

Jumping pillows! Jump until you are out of breath 🙂

Favorite basketballs!

Making giant bubbles! Some kids were chasing bubbles. Me and other kids were making bubbles. The bubbles are enormous!

Hay Rides! I remember that one time, I took Julie to the hay ride. Her eyes were brighter and she got so excited (she is from New York, and only ride dirty trains most of the time :))

Train rides! You got to see more animals that are chilling under the sun, like alpacas and donkeys

Tractor rides! I barely fit into these tractors but still can ride it to chase my son 🙂

Many many games and animal shows! Just name a few: apple sling shot, sand pit, mazes, tractor pulls, duck races, face painting, balloon making …. They are all free. Those ladies are the volunteers and they make balloons for kids whole day!

Kids and animals are so healing. I was talking to this little one
“how old are you?”
“I don’t know”
“What’s your name?”
“Spiderman”
Kids are just angels 🙂

Every year, I come here, and I see beauty, humor, warm smiles, blue skies, sun and hopes! Our human life is supposed to be like this.

Indiana Dune National Park

This national park is hilarious: (1) grocery stores and bass pro shop is 10-20 minutes away (dependent on which part of the park you are located) ; (2) within a walking distance of the campsite, there is a restaurant and a convenient store with an excellent ice cream —- in case you messed up your food over the camp fire, there is a backup :D; (3) our camp site manager stated that the best fishing is outside the national park like in Washington Park; (4) the best hiking is in the Indian Dune State Park, which is inside the national park, but you have to pay the entrance fee one more time to the state park :); (5) when you drive from one spot to another spot of the national park, sometimes, you are on a highway and see those container trucks and cementer mixer driving by, as well as the factories not far away (that old midwest feeling), lol

Well, I guess it is not that bad :). At the visit center, you hear people say: “In the Indian dunes, I touched the earth and become stronger thereby”. Many different species of birds migrate from Canada to south, and will stay here for a period of time. In May, the park will host the birding festival. We were here in August, but did not see any special birds.

This park has a diverse of natural habitats, like marsh, swamp, bog and savanna. There are more than 1100 native plants. You can see exotic plants like the carnivorous plant (pitcher plant). There are many 1-2 miles short trails here, which work well for families. For example, in the Great March trail, you see many wild flowers and the beautiful heroin.

Watch a heroin in my binocular

A famous trail here is the 3-Dune challenges. Most of the time, you are just sinking in the sands and fighting with the slopes like almost 45 degrees :). You are debating “should I be bare feet or wear my hiking boot?”:D It’s not a great trail to see the shape of dunes but fun to hike.

The great place to see dunes is Mt Baldy. Coming to the national parks, you see the evidences that nature hands shape things, like carving a lake and moving the dunes. I sometimes accelerate the process and visualize it in my head. This whole space is formed by glacier carving and moraine. The dunes are moving yearly due to the wind of the lake Michigan, and the forests are then buried under the sand. Some dunes are not safe to hike, there are holes where people can drop in. The largest moving dune here is called Mt Baldy. It moves 20 feet away from the lake every year. There are vegetation like marram grass and cotton wood trees covering the dunes here and there.

Another great trail to see the dunes are the west beach trails. There are three trails connected here, several miles. The first part of the trail is an easy access of stairs. You will give a smile after several days walking in the sink sands on the trails 😀

At the end of this trail, we arrived at the beach. Mt Baldy trail also leads to a very good beach. There were not many people during week days. It is easy to stay here for hours just to enjoy the tranquility, hear the winds, read books, talk to friends, feel the sun, trek the water or skip the stones on the water.

Here comes the fishing. The ranger recommends a place called the “portage lakefront” in the park. The pure blue sky, open water beautiful view was so pleasant. We were there whole afternoon, picnic, reading and yoga/pilate. My son caught an 19 inch long fish. Nobody voted to eat that poor fish, we believed it can survive so we released it. There is this steal factor right besides us, not sure how clean this water is.

My favorite about camping trips? many! Almost every day, there was this cool morning sun, and its ray directly arrived at my eyes when I waked up. There were beautiful stars in the dark at night. There were thunderstorms and lightening one night and the whole tent was shaking :). There was also that coyote who waked me up around the midnight, and it lasted quite a long time.

Camp sites need to book months in advance, especially for the weekends. The dune wood camp grounds are in the woods and have showers. The camp site is clean and spacious.

Besides hiking, fishing and camping, there are also kayak (you need to bring your own) and biking (rental available at the visitor center). In winter, it will be cool to watch how ice is formed on the lake Michigan and there is also awesome cross country. In the visit center, there is a great video which can make you super excited about this “uncool looking” park :D. It is always a good start point of your trip.

National parks never disappoint me. I always find so much beauty and then give it a smile. Going to museums, you discover your favorite arts, while going to the nature, you find your favorite scenes, scents, sound and stories.

Singapore (5) Skyline Luge

“What is luge?” I asked my friend.
“you rode down the mountain in a little cart”
Wow, it sounds exotic :). Indeed, according to their website, only Singapore, New Zealand, South Korea and Canada …, a few places have this.

Skyline luge is located in Setaso on top of the mountain, the same place where the cable car ends. Taking escalators among the trees on the mountain feels exotic. You see wild peacocks chill around once you reach the top.

The carts look like this.

The ride only takes a few minutes. But the lines are long. The good thing is that the signs tell you how long you need to wait. We rode a couple of times and mostly waited for about 15 minutes on the top for the cart and 5 minutes on the bottom for the lift.

It is very easy to learn how to steer the cart (kids do it :)). Once you head out, there are a couple of trails. You can select the curving ones; you can experience the speed and try the straight down ones; there are also ones going into a tunnel or among the tall trees.

Then you take lift back to the top. The lift also automatically loads the carts and ship them to the top. It looks quite amusing.

It is a pleasant ride at the time when there is beautiful sunset and warm breeze.

“Once is never enough”, I agree. I wish the trails can be a bit longer. We stopped after a few runs when we still want to play. It’s like a cliffhanger that makes us look forward to the next luge trip. It’s another pleasant evening and great experience!

Singapore (4) Gardens by the bay – skyway

Here, we arrived at the third part of the Gardens by the Bay. Surprise that many people were siting on the floor around here … “There will be a light show starting at 7:45pm” one of the girls told me. We totally did not plan that, and we were so lucky!!

The light show was about half an hour and played with famous Broadway music, “Little Shop of Horrors” “Les Miserable” “Evita – don’t cry for me Argentina” “Phantom of Opera” … Those songs have accompanied me many years of NYC Broadway show experiences, so it was touching to hear them here and sing along. The lights danced with music, so did the people around the lights. Everyone had a good time. Some moments can genuinely bring you joy like this one. I also felt this when I was in the Shanghai Disney watching fireworks and light shows. Just keep smiling and feel happy.

We then took elevators up to the sky way which allows us to walk around the “light trees” at a certain height. Wow, suddenly, you were emerging in the light sea.

Skyway is several minutes of walk. You can see about 30 trees around here with different colors. It sometimes feels futuristic and alien.

From the skyway, you also see the beautiful night skyline of Singapore.

Some moments in life are like pearls: they are just so pure and beautiful. Hope you can spend those moments with your loved ones; if not, at least share those moments.

Hangzhou (2) Hangzhou Steelworks Park

My parents used to work in a big factory. So I grew up in the environment where there were big warehouses, the sound of big machinery, and the smell of screws and oil. Visiting the Steelworks Park feels like going back to my little girl era —- I worn two little pony tails and held mom’s hand across the factory to find that public shower. Visiting here is thus almost an emotional experience.

Hangzhou Steelworks Park is built from an old steel factory. In the early years, the factories were all moved out of city, but the warehouses, the train tracks and the big machinery stayed. Nowadays, the park hosts summer concerts, and the warehouses are changing into galleries and art studios.

I went with a group of old friends. We arrived after a big heavy rain, and the garage is almost empty. We talked and laughed loud like old days, and an empty creepy looking garage is a perfect place for it.

From any point of the park, there are scenic views.

My photograph friends especially like the paddles after the rain. They were playing the reflections.

The park is in the middle of remodeling. So we sneaked into the furnace area. They climbed up while I stayed with my son. The machinery, rustic, industrial style is always my taste, and even my current workshop has tables, lockers and shelves that were recycled from the factory.

Steel factory has train tracks. The train is newly painted and we were climbing around for fun and posing for pictures here.

The trees, the grasses, the flowers and the mountains bring the fresh greeness in front of your eyes and the fragrance to your nose. It makes a unique effect where the vivid life is grown mixed with those hard, cold, silent machines.

Following the warm light, we found a coffeeshop in the warehouse and there is even a bookstore.

Writing travel log is almost like traveling a second time. I am feeling the hot humid air that day, and the warmness of the conversations among us.

Singapore (3) Gardens by the bay – Cloud Forest

One surprise may be impressive, but some consecutive surprises just —- can not be surpassed!

Cloud forest is the second astonishing site. It is shaped vertically and the designers used visual clues to make you feel that you are climbing up to a mountain. Hmm, what we often see when hiking in the mountains? The trail map said you can visit “lost world” “tree top walk” “waterfall view” “cloud walk” …

Once you enter the cloud forest, here is the tall ever waterfall that are welcoming you.

Turning around the waterfall, there are less people. Your neck is bent backwards and you breathe inhales the forest mist. It’s peaceful as in the forest.

The hiking trail seems a bit easy :D, but the views are quite unique.

There are real plants: “Please do not touch the Carnivorous plant, or you will be fed to them.” hmm, it must be yummy ;). And there are this man-made artistic lotus. They compete each other for the beauty.

Turning around the corner, you see the city sunset. One side is Marina Bay Sands, and the other side is the light garden! They are layered with the lines of the windows and mist of the waterfall

See the skylines through the geometric shaped windows.

The trails go up. You see different paths like the overpasses in the city highways. I was thinking about the movie “inception” :).

The waterfalls are so close that you almost can touch it.

Here must be the peak! At every step, there is a different but beautiful view.

We happened to be at the best time to visit here. You can see the light of the sky changes from bright white to darker blue. The lights in the forest just came on. It is a completely different feeling of the “forest”.

The visual interaction room is fun too. When you touch a flower bud, the flower opens 🙂

Watching a video about the cloud forest.

Living fossils — cycards–witness the history of the lives on earth. Maybe being still like plants is a possible way to survive history.

You don’t just want to be good. You want to be surprisingly good, again and again, to convince the world.

Singapore (2) Gardens by the bay – Flower Dome

This place brings me many surprises!

I thought I went there to see a garden. Then wow, it is many gardens! It is a huge space located in the city center, you can just walk and walk … for the entire evening. You see the beauty and feel the magnificence especially when you think about Singapore is a small country and the hotel rooms are often just a small bed :).

On one side, the gardens connect to Marina Bay Sands, and on the other side, there is this 360+ meters ferris wheel. I have been many places in the world, but never have seen anything like this, no wonder that the gardens won many design awards.

Here is the night view of the gardens, consisting of Flower Dome, Cloud forest and Sky way.

When you get off the subway, the exit looks like this. “we can dance here!!” I was so excited and spinned several circles. Indeed, later, when we came back, there were some groups dancing hip hop 🙂

It’s the sunset time. The soft ray peeks through the windows and highlight the entire garden with a layer of gold. The entrance is on the top of the flower dome, so you see the entire garden once you enter.

You walk along the path and it takes you to different parts of the world. Here are many different kinds of cactus from South America?!

The special exhibition was rose. I have never seen so many roses, many different colors. The smiles just automatically climb up your face when your eyes are filled with flowers!

The gardens indeed are a good place to tell the fair tales: remember that Alice in wonderland?

It’s also a great place to take your lovers. Are you smiling now? 😀 🙂

Singapore (1) night safari

What do animals look like at night? Are you excited to hangout late at night? We are all super excited to visit the night safari, the world first. 2024 is its 30 years’ anniversary.

The vibe looks like this 🙂 😀

The night safari is located at the north west corner of Singapore. It considers the Singapore bio tour corner? There are also Singapore zoo, river wonderness and bird paradise. You can come out a whole day to visit them. It took more than 1 hours to get there via public transportation. If it is not at the traffic hour, you can just take a taxi.

The night safari opens 6:30 pm or 7:30pm in summer and closes at midnight. There are a few “must-do”s, and the first of course includes the shows!! There are light and fire shows (see on the left), and also the animals’ performance, such as the performance of owls and vultures (see on the right).

The food stands here sell Singapore signature dishes. It tastes good but very expensive. This following dish costs about 30 Singapore dollars, and in a normal food court, it only costs a few Singapore dollars.

The second “must-do” is to take the tram and tour around the safari. We waited in line close an hour. There are frequent trams, but there are also a lot of people.

It’s astonishing to see those creatures at night. They are peacefully hanging around. You almost can imagine that’s how they look like in the wild at night. There are birds, beavers, porcupine, and many exotic Asian animals. It is hard to take photos at night on a moving tram, so only big animals can show here. There are also some animals walking right beside the trams. For example, a cute anteater sniffs around near our tram. The driver said he walks down this road every day to see his girl friend on the other side 😀 :).

The tram takes about half an hour. Our driver was a super cute old man. He said to us “give me your camera and let me take a picture for your family. They charge you 50 bucks for taking a picture for you”, he pointed at those picture-service people 🙂 Besides taking the tram, you can also walk the trails. The trail is busy with people and from time to time, you see a staff carrying a flash light. We walked the entire trail system and it took us about 2 hours. We did skip some places on the road.

Slow Loris is my son’s favorite. It is world’s only venomous primate. It looks cute and innocent, but it has venom!!

The athletic devil looks so lazy and pigish. He slepts happily when we were there. Then, there is this recording playing its scary sound when you push the button. err, can’t blame people to name him the “devil”. I have also seen them in Australia.

When we left the zoo, it was already 11:30pm. There are a couple of buses still running outside the zoo. My phone has some issues with the map app that day. It is great that we followed a group of warm-hearted Australian tourists and got off the bus at this train station called Bright Hill. Well, it is called bright hill, but when we arrived, the last train has left :(. Now I was in the middle of nowhere in Singapore with 70-years old parents and 1 sleepy kid and a phone that has a broken map app. so I messaged my friend and he immediately called a taxi and made sure we were onboard. Such an adventure at the bright hill :).

Nothing is more happy for me than taking out my loved ones for fun. It was a great memory for my parents and son.

Hangzhou (1) Nine Creeks in Misty Forest

Driving along Zhijiang Road (之江路), passing Liu He Ta (六和塔)and Zhejiang University Zhijiang Campus (浙大之江校区), you’ll arrive at the Nine creeks tourist area. This is one of my favorite places to visit in Hangzhou, especially in June. It is beautiful and cool (temperature). From Zhijiang road where the buses and taxis stop, the walk towards Nine Creeks in Misty Forest is like 1-2 miles, but the trail is covered by the treetops and you don’t even need sunscreen. The creeks run along the trail. The water is clear and not deep, so you can go down anytime to trek the creeks. There are stones and little waterfalls, and it is certainly a fun walk. Of course, remember to bring your water shoes, for the stones can make your feet really hurt.

The left and right sides of the trail are the slopes where the tea trees grow. They are the famous long jing tea production fields. It makes a typical “Jiangnan” (江南)scenery that I often miss when in US. I saw some bike riders, and it indeed looks like fun to ride on this road.

If you are tired of walking, you can spend 8 RMB to take the electric go-cart ride. Here is the map. There are many restaurants and hotels around the area.

The water is originated from the two sources, one from the Shizi peak at the Longjing mountain (龙井狮子峰) and the other is from Yangmei Ling, Wengjia Mountain (杨梅岭,翁家山). The water splits into nine creeks in the area, and eventually they are all merged and enter the Qianjiang river (钱塘江). The longest creek is a total of 7 km.

There are 18 creek-crossing like this along the trail. You can trek through the waters or jump around the stones to cross. You can also rent a tent and some tables/chairs for some tea nearby to enjoy the misty forest, 25-38 RMB per person, dependent on the type of tea.

The ice bars here are shaped with tourist symbols. I have been admiring them.

There are also waterfalls and beautiful Mandarin ducks to see if you hike around. You can play there whole day easily.

What to wear: water shoes (for both hiking and creek walk), T-shirt, shorts
What to bring: water (you can also bring water toys, towel, hat, slippers and bug spray if you don’t mind carrying things)
